In southwest Madagascar we have been working with our trusted partner United World Schools to build a new school at Namatoa in the remote region of Atsimo Andreafana (see Annual Reports 2025 / 2026 and video message below). There is a massive unmet educational need in this impoverished part of the country, especially amongst girls, where the population density is very high and attendance rates are very low. New schools in Madagascar have to be block built so that they are cyclone-resistant and material transportation costs are very expensive. Nevertheless, construction work has all gone to plan and the rebuilt Namatoa School was officially opened in September 2026. It will serve 816 children from 4 different local districts who will now have educational opportunities that simply didn’t exist for them before. As well as new classrooms, we have provided a new well, gender-specific toilets, hand washing facilities, girls hygiene rooms, new classroom furniture and new teaching resources which will enable the school to go from strength to strength in the coming years.
